It cannot be denied that there are hundreds of thousands or perhaps millions of people around the globe who are overweight or obese. Some may not know it but there are actually many health issues concerning overweight people.

To name a few, those who are obese have a much greater risk of dying from heart disease, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, stroke, high cholesterol, hypertension, osteoarthritis, fatty liver disease, gout, gallbladder disease and gall stone and stroke than those who aren't. And these are just the physical effects of being overweight. The other problem linked with this health issue is of an emotional and mental dimension. All of us hate the three letter word, F-A-T, and hearing that word being said to our face is like having a bucket of ice cold water poured over our head.

So, what are the reasons why people get overweight? Lifestyle is that one word which can cause you health problems if you're living it unbalanced. Here's a more detailed explanation:

1. Food

The food you eat contributes a lot to your present state of health. Eating pork, junk food, chocolate, caffeinated drinks, soda and, of course, eating too much sweets can add too many calories in your body that will surely be more than what your body can burn. Anything you body does not burn will be stored as fat. Instead of ordering soda with your meals, opt for a glass of water. This way, you are not only cutting on your sugar intake but you are also cleaning up your system by flushing away the toxins in your body. The key to staying fit is to eat the right food in the right amounts.

2. Exercise

Do you even hit the gym at least once a week? Most overweight people do not exert extra effort to sweat out the calories they consume. It is advisable that you exercise every week to be lean or fit. If there is no gym near the place you are living in, you can jog in the park or you can buy an exercise machine like a treadmill. Having your own treadmill gives you the convenience of working out anytime you want at the comfort of your home. Avoid sitting in front of the television the whole day. Instead, get up on your feet and get moving!

3. Depression

Many overweight people tend to eat more than they normally do. They find eating as a 'comfort blanket' which makes their problems temporarily disappear. If you are a person who binges when depressed, it would be best if you find healthier ways to calm yourself or be relieved of what you are feeling. Talk to a friend, go out or maybe get a hobby.
